Snoring Cures and Snoring Solutions
I’ve broken this page down into two different parts by separating cures and solutions. Under cures I will address natural ways of curing snoring. On the other hand snoring solutions will cover mechanical type solutions such as jaw supporters, exercises, and hardware type items. By doing this I will show that snoring can be relieved possibly by natural and unnatural methods.
Snoring Cures
The first cure for snoring seems to be an effective one: go on a diet. The Doctors Book of Home Remedies states that the majority of snorers are over-weight middle aged men. Doctors have found that just being slightly overweight, in men about 20 percent over ideal body weight, and women 30 to 40 percent over ideal body weight can cause snoring. They’ve found that the more overweight you are the more likely your airway will collapse. The good news is that if you are a moderate snorer and you lose weight your snoring will become less loud and possibly it will end.
Many snorers find that they get relief from snoring by sleeping on their side rather than their back. To keep themselves from turning over in the middle of the night some people sew a small ball like a tennis ball into the back of their pajamas to make it uncomfortable when they try to lie on their back.
Avoid alcohol and sedatives prior to going to bed as these two items can contribute or make snoring worse because they relax tissues around the head and neck. Antihistamines also seem to have this effect on snorers.
Snoring Solutions
Since 1874 according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office there have been patents issued for over 300 different anti-snoring devices. Some of the earlier ones included a small microphone that would detect snoring sounds and cause an alarm to blast off in your ear waking you up. Another device clamped on to your molars and applied pressure to your soft palate to prevent vibration. These and many more devices are no longer available for some reason.
A couple of newer devices on the market seem to be pretty effective in treating snorers. These include the MySnoringSolution Jaw Supporterwhich works by keeping the lower jaw in an upward position. This increases the three dimensional space in the airway and reduces vibration of the soft tissue which will eliminate or reduce snoring.
Another device is the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine which works by releasing continuous pressurized air into your nose allowing unobstructed breathing. The bad thing about this device is it’s bulky and requires the patient to go through sleep therapy in most cases before it will be issued.
There are some great resources available for more information on snoring as well as sleep apnea and they are listed in the sidebar to the right.
